Some of our best sellers are the split back nymphs; both the BWO and PMD versions are fish catchers. Here’s our attempt to put this into a perdigon style fly.
Here is the recipe for the BWO version:
- Hook: Firehole 551, sizes 14-20. https://www.discountflies.com/product/M-FIRE551.html or Kona Jig Hook https://www.discountflies.com/product/M-KBJH.html
- Bead: Firehole slotted tungsten, 2.5mm. We like gold. https://www.discountflies.com/product/M-FIRE25MM.html
- Thread (underbody): SemperFli Nano Silk, 18/0 Olive. https://www.discountflies.com/product/M-SNS18.html. You could also use Brown for the entire fly so that you do not need to change the thread color for the thorax.
- Tail: CDL or other stiff tail fiber like Brown Pheasant Patch fibers https://www.discountflies.com/product/M-CCPHP.html
- Body: Polish Quills Stripped Quills, Olive. https://www.discountflies.com/product/M-PQSPQ.html
- Thorax: SemperFli Nano Silk, 18/0 Brown. https://www.discountflies.com/product/M-SNS18.html.
- Wingcase: Yellow/green SemperFli Fluorobrite (https://www.discountflies.com/...) or SemperFli Fluorescent Floss (https://www.discountflies.com/...). Glo-Brite #11 will also work. Finally, a yellow biot would work.
- UV: https://www.discountflies.com/product/M-UVTNB.html
- Bodkin with Foot (great for spreading UV): https://www.discountflies.com/product/M-RWBEST.html
For a PMD version, we’d probably use a brown or natural quill and a tan thread for the thorax.
