Shane Stalcup’s “Mayflies: Top to Bottom” is one of the best resources for timeless mayfly patterns. This is a book that is worth tying through – cover to cover – several times over. The CDC Emerging Dun is one of our favorite BWO emergers.
Tying and Fishing Notes:
- Our favorite color is olive (BWOs), but this can be tied for PMDs (brown body, yellow thorax) and other mayflies (gray, tan).
- We like ultrafine Kapok dubbing, especially for smaller hook sizes, because the dubbing noodle can be very thin and precise.
- We like to fish this behind a larger Parachute Adams or BWO. Try putting a bit of Frog’s Fanny on this fly, which will help trap air bubbles.
