A Classic Steelhead fly for the PNW. This fly can be tied in countless color variations: https://www.discountflies.com/SRCH.html?Search=hoh+bo. There are just as many techniques to tie the fly. Our goal with this video is to show a few basic techniques and design concepts as well as highlight a few alternative materials.

Here are a few general thoughts on tying this fly:

  • Be sure to double-back the wire through the eye and secure with thread. The addition of super glue at this point makes the fly very durable.
  • Add the trailer hook as the last step. Inherent in this design is also the ability to change the trailer hook at will.
  • While the traditional fly uses materials like Guinea and Lady Amherst fibers, there are substitutes like Gadwall feathers and Voodoo fibers that offer the same patterns and behave very similar in the water.
  • The marabou collars are of some preference. Dense vs sparse? We don’t know the right answer, but do know the basics we show in the video will allow you to experiment!
