Tying the Chubby Chernobyl

For us, the Chubby Chernobyl is in the Top 5 greatest dry flies of all time. In a dry-dropper setup, this is our go-to dry. Tried and true, this fly is worthy of any fly box. Our insight into tying a GOAT is minimal. We have, however, found that there are conditions in which multiple layers of foam improve the buoyancy of the fly. Either in heavy water conditions or when supporting a larger tungsten bead, 2 or 3 layers of foam can be helpful. *As the thickness of the foam increases, the choice of hook becomes more important.* Even though the foam floats, it still has weight. If a thin wire hook is used there isn’t enough weight in the hook for the fly to land hook point down. This is why a 2x heavy hook is important. We take this a bit further and suggest the Firehole 811 streamer hook. In addition to the 2x heavy wire, the gap is bigger and the hook point is wicked sharp.

When using multiple layers of foam, we like to glue them together use spray adhesive and letting them dry under a heavy object. An alternative, which works perfectly well, is to use two layers of foam without gluing them together.
