Midges, also known as Chironomids, are generally fairly small insects in the size #18 to #24 range, but some are good sized bugs, as large as #10. They are found in most rivers in the U.S., and hatch year around. Their availability makes them a very important food source to trout, especially when other bugs are not hatching. While midges are small, even the biggest of trout have to eat, and they consume a lot of midges! The body color can range from black, brown, olive, tan and the most common being red. As adults, midges are fish food when they hatch and when they return to the water to mate and lay eggs. Often, adult midges will cluster into a dense ball, which makes a Griffith's Gnat one of the most effective patterns to imitate adult midges.
