Description Despite it's name, the pale morning dun can hatch in the morning, the afternoon or evening. It is very common on most western waters, and trout really key in on this mayfly when it starts to move. Take several varieties of the PMD, including the extended body version, because trout can be very selective, shunning one variety, while eagerly taking another.

Description The Comparadun Style of wing, from underneath (you know...the fish perspective from below!) looks just like a mayfly with it's wings lowered. The tail makes it look like the nymph is crawling out of its exoskeleton, and to a trout, this means they need to grab that fly right now!

This fly is also effective for the following hatches:
  • Pink Lady or Slate Brown Dun
  • Little Marryatt
  • Pale Morning Dun
  • Sulfur dun
  • White Winged Sulfur

Description The comparadun style of a mayfly is used on spring creeks and slower moving water, because of it's realism. Even when trout have a good opportunity to inspect a cdc biot comparadun PMD, they can still be fooled by this excellent style of fly.

Description The Sulphur Dun is the Eastern equivalent to the Pale Morning Dun of the West. Sulphurs usually hatch in the evening, (although they can hatch mid-day on cloudy days) early in the season, with prolific numbers of mayflies hatching at a time. If this pattern doesn't produce, trail a PMD Emerger (available in our nymph store) behind a dry fly.

Pale Morning Duns (Ephemerella) are common to most western rivers in the U.S. The hatch can begin as early as May, and extend through September, with almost daily hatches. Like the name implies, this hatch usually begins before or close to noon, often with a spinner fall in the morning or evening.

Sulfur or Sulphur Duns (Ephemerella, Epeorus and Stenacron) are common to most mid-west and eastern rivers, with similar colors as the PMD. Body colors range from pale yellow to orange to tan, with wings that are grey. Sizes range from #14 to #18. Spinner falls can be very important part of the hatch.
