There's a moment during the life cycle of every aquatic insect when they are caught between two worlds: the subsurface and the surface. At no time are they as vulnerable as when they are shedding their casing and emerging as an adult. The Defenseless PMD captures that very moment as the midge struggles to free itself from its shuck. Tied on a swimming nymph hook, the Defenseless PMD rides up in the water, legs pulling forward wings emerging, while its trailing CDC shuck and abdomen lie flat on the water's surface, making it a very tempting target for foraging trout. The genus Ephemerella mayfly, or pale morning dun represents the largest mayfly hatch in North America, both in sheer numbers of insects and the number of rivers that they are found in. The Etha Wing Pale Morning Dun Emerger should be fished with floatant applied only to the wings of the fly. The rest of the fly will sink, giving a trout the appearance that the pmd is hatching. Trout love to eat emergers because they are defenseless and an easy meal.
