Tying Cat's Matchstick Midge
by DiscountFlies • September 24, 2024 in Fly Tying Videos, Fly Designers
We will eventually have a video of Cat tying this fly, but until then....
Another one of guide Cat Toy's go-to patterns that has proven itself day in and day out on all types of water and across all seasons. It is no secret that fish eat lots of midges throughout the year. In fact, experts have identified over 10,000 midge species. After putting samples under a microscope, Cat created this fly to mimic the lighter shades...from tan to yellowish. The bright rib and head help this fly stand out from the naturals.

- Body: thread
- Rib: UTC Hot Orange wire, small. https://www.discountflies.com/product/M-UTCUWSM.html
- Head: UTC Burgundy 70D. Use red if you don’t have burgundy.
Note: if you dab the UV resin with your fingers prior to curing, you'll get a fly with more texture. Alternatively, create a smooth body and let the rib shine through for segmentation.
