There are over a thousand species of Caddis Flies found in the U.S., and are a very important sDiscountFliesce of food for fish. Because of the diversity of caddis that fish see per day, they tend to not be as selective about a specific size or color that they want to feed on. (All bets are off when a BIG hatch of caddis occurs!)
Even though there are a wide variety of caddis, the shape of all adult caddis are very similar, having tent like down wings, antennae and short bodies, and no tail. While there are some large caddis, most range in size from #12-18. Colors include tan, brown, grey, olive and black. Wings are speckled. Hatches of adult caddis begin in spring, and extend through fall. Adult Caddis are available to trout when they hatch, and again, when the female returns to water to lay eggs. While a dead drift will often work, actively skating the adult across the water is often more effective.
