New materials are a big driver of fly design and innovation. Jig off beads (also known as inverting beads) were originally used for nymph patterns. Capt Dave, however, is using these beads to improve saltwater flies. By incorporating the bead into the body of the fly, the fly lands softer and sinks hook (and head) up. The perfect shrimp for tailing fish!

There's some debate surrounding the origins of this fly. Most seem to agree that Richard Whitner was involved in the early development of crab patterns using flex material. What isn't up for debate is that this crab pattern is a go-to fish slayer. The mesh flex material and internal dumbell eyes result in a fly that sinks rapidly and can be put right in front of feeding fish.

A classic mantis with a twist. The body is made of Semperfli Eggstatic Chenille Fritz. This material not only looks shrimpy and translucent when wet, it also has tiny pearlescent guard hairs built into the material that fish can't resist.
