This fly has proven to be a hot early season pattern here in eastern Washington. I use size 16s in March and April when the chironomid pupa are small. Without a doubt it's my favorite early pattern. As expected, has worked the best when small red midges are coming off, but still continues to get fish when other colors are present. It is so effective that my 12-year old son, fly fishing for the first time in a desert lake, got nine fish with it! And these weren't dinks, browns to 19" and bows to 24". The hook is strong and will not bend.
