The Maccaffertium vicarium mayfly begins hatching when the water temperature hits about 42 degrees Fahrenheit, which is usually March! The hatch is usually in the afternoon, and a spinner fall occurs later on that day. The March Brown fly pattern imitates this adult mayfly very well. These are generally big mayflies, which cause trout to feed with "reckless abandon", with big splashes being the typical bite.

This is probably the best imitation of a Pale Morning Dun that is available. Use this when all else fails.

Unfortunately, due the delicate nature that this pattern is tied, this fly is only good for catching 1, and maybe 2 fish before it is damaged beyond repair.

Despite it's name, the pale morning dun can hatch in the morning, the afternoon or evening. It is very common on most western waters, and trout really key in on this mayfly when it starts to move. Take several varieties of the PMD, because trout can be very selective, shunning one variety, while eagerly taking another.
